DEC 9TH-Second hand shopping at the children’s home

If you are ever out here in Arizona and you just happen to be one of those people that love old things, then you shouldn’t miss stopping at the Sunshine Acres children’s home.

It’s way out in Mesa, and I always love stopping off here when I am ever in that part of our state. It is a huge thrift store that has just about anything you can think of and the best part is that it helps out the kids who live here. They also take donations if anyone has items they want to get rid of. You never know what you will find at this thrift store, like this cute little sign.

My dad’s siblings used to live in a children’s home for awhile. It was around the time my grandma and grandpa were separated and in the process of divorcing. Some of the kids got separated and ended up for a time in a children’s home. My dad and his twin brother stayed with my grandma. Eventually they would all be back together again. A couple years later when my grandma met her second husband, she went to go get the rest of her kids out of the children’s home.

Okay, I tend to do this, get side tracked with my posts. This is a post about the Mesa’s children’s home, which is really nice, not about that home from my dad’s time growing up. At Sunshine acres, every time I see the children out on the grounds they are all having fun and happy. They even have big birthday parties. And there are horses on the property that the kids ride and take care of. Nothing scary about this place, its all happy and cheerful to me.

When you shop or donate here you can’t  bother or  be around the children though, they are well protected. Inside the store there are all kinds of little houses built for displays. If you are ever in the need for furniture or dishes when starting out in a new home then second hand shopping will save you so much money and keep you out of debt.

Even if you have to change the furniture up a bit because it is outdated, vintage furniture was made well back in the day, so it has good bones. Although, I will say that there are some crazy pieces out in the world when shopping second hand, it can be a history lesson in trends and styles. Remember, everyone has their own taste, don’t be judgy. To each his own.

Now days I do notice a bunch of new furniture is made cheaply if you aren’t careful. I told my husband I think they are putting catnip in particle boards now. He laughed of course but our cats love some of our kids furniture we bought them growing up.

A little paint and some new hardware on an old kitchen hutch will really make it unique and one of a kind. This is what makes your house a home…your special touches you put into it. Like this kitchen hutch I fell in love with. I have no place to put it of course but I wanted it.

I love the green color they had chosen to paint it with. Sometimes we aren’t brave enough to try those bold colors. This color came out great. It really pops and draws the eyes to it. This piece would be the star in any kitchen in my opinion.

I would even buy all the dishes displayed in it if I were redoing a kitchen that is. The red, green, white and black all look great together.

There were two areas I got stuck in at this thrift store, the vintage costume jewelry section and the craft and fabric section.

ou know I love my vintage fabrics to create with.

There was a sale that day on craft supplies in the back. Baskets of scrapbooking supplies, pink miniature bottle top trees, lace, buttons, flowers etc….think you get what I mean. The items in the basket were all priced 50 cents. I headed out with a bag of supplies to take home and make into things

If you think you are done once you head out of the warehouse section, think again, because there is a little boutique on the property where they keep the nicer things to sell.

Before heading into the boutique I ran into this display of baskets and you guessed it, I bought a basket. But only one, just one doesn’t hurt anything. That basket is up north now in Our Little Red House, never know when I will need it for something up there like collecting art supplies in the woods like mini pine cones.

In the boutique you will find one of a kind pieces like this hand painted dresser.I think this would be so adorable in a baby’s nursery.

I ended up picking out some of these old valentines, they are reproductions but I am okay with that because I plan on doing some sort of art project later with them.

The boutique used to be a little house, so the rooms are set up in different themes. There is a kitchen with all kinds of vintage mixed with modern pieces to decorate with.

They even have antique coin banks.

This room reminds me of a cozy cabin out in the woods.

And like every other thrift store out in the world, all the sale items are way in the back and in this case the back was a tiny little back yard. I saw these little stools and almost bought one to add to my collection. Not sure why I love them so much, but stools are so cool to me. I have two here in my home and two up north so that is enough. Think I like little wooden stools because I am short compared to most of my family. I use them a lot.

Then I came across these wooden chairs, they were so cute. I couldn’t pass on getting one of these. I picked the one in the far back but left the faux leaves behind, didn’t want those. I got it for the bargain price of $2. I will use it as a shelf and bring it out for holidays to decorate with.

I took a photo of this old Victorian rocker to show to our Friends up north. They are always looking for items to fill their museum with and thought this was a unique find. Such a short rocker, first time I ever saw a rocker so low to the ground.

Whoops almost forgot to show you guys the toy section. There were old Raggedy Ann dolls (Think these were the homemade variety) and a really cool dollhouse.

After our day of shopping we stopped off to have some German food. Here in Arizona and just about all over our country there is never a shortage of different types of foods to try.DSC_0446.JPG

Hope you all enjoyed this little trip with us. Have fun out there second hand shopping, nothing wrong with that and remember the planet will love you for it. I think I owned a few of these pieces before…remember to each his own, we all have our own unique styles. Happy junking everyone.

    1. It is, they have so much there. Everyone donates really nice items since it all goes to the children’s center. We have foster care here as well. It is nice knowing that the kids who don’t have family to take care of them, have a nice place to stay until they do.

I LOVE how you go into detail with stories, very fitting talking a little about your dad and his siblings. I always get stuck in the crafts section of any store lol , let alone a trift store.

    1. I am a bit of a craft hoarding so I have to be so careful. My family laughs at how I trail off in a conversation and start talking about a memory that reminds me of something. Everyone on my father’s side does that. If you have a conversation with them expect a history lesson on their past as well. At least I am not alone in that, now I know where it comes from.

      2. My husband is famous for editing and so is his mom. My mother-in-law at one family event looked at me in the middle of a conversation and said “Too many questions!” to me. I told my husband it was too quiet, no one was talking. I just trying to get some conversations going. We all laugh now at that and when we are in an awkward and quiet situation someone in our group will say “Too many questions” and we all start laughing. My mother-in-law is in her late 80’s and from Italy, she has a very thick accent. I hate quiet get togethers.

Me yoo my greatest fear is quiet in our home as the kids grow. We joke we live in a zoo with all the kids their friends and partners and all our pets. And even tho often i just need a break from it all Id never wish for it permanently

      4. Me either. I would hate to have an empty home. My husband wants to build some sort of adobe house with mini houses around so our kids can be close and have their own spaces. It’s a fun daydream. I will always have animals in my home.

I could spend all day in this store! The green kitchen furniture is beautiful. This is the type of furniture that gives an exceptional character to a room. Oh, and the kitchen hutch you bought: stunning. I love when you make us discover the places in your area and take us to shop with you. Great post.

      2. I have fun sharing my shopping adventures with you all. I should do one with my daughter when she is looking for outfits at second shops. She found the cutest little skirt that flares out and it is covered in macaroons. Everytime she wears it she gets tons of compliments and she always tells everyone she bought it at a thrift store for $1. She wears it with black tights and a pink turtleneck sweater. I have another shopping adventure coming up in a post for January. It’s at an outdoor swap meet.

Looking forward to read your post. I have the feeling that your daughter and I would have fun shopping together. I also like vintage boutique and thrift store. By the way, the theme for our January edition of When Fashion and Nature Collide is outdoor activities! 😄🎄

  5. I use to have that ann and andy dolls awwww. I love that kitchen hutch, and the one in that was in the boutique that looked like it was a light grey colour. Stools, who doesn’t like stools. You can stand on them, if you are a few inches short. You can sit on them, prop your feet on them. Use them to sit things on so your not bending over as much. Ok, I think I just let everyone know, I love stools too hahaha 🙂 And NO one basket doesn’t hurt, or a dozen. Like the stools they are handy 😉

    1. I know, I love stools. Baskets are perfect when you want to share something with someone. I have given out baskets with craft supplies and some of my patterns I have designed, baskets with plants in little pots from clippings and seeds from my garden and baskets full of homemade breads, cookies, jams and even salsa and chips. I love baskets.
