3 simple DIY tiny pumpkins.

Halloween is just around the corner and if you blink it will be here before you know it. I am so happy the holiday seasons are coming up. These next few months are my favorite times of the year. Right now I see Fall decor everywhere. We don’t do a lot of shopping for Fall decor, nothing like we do for Christmas but I do like to add a few handmade and second hand decorations here and there around our home. One of my favorite Fall decor items is pumpkins.

I still buy pumpkins to carve even though my kids are all grown up.We always enjoyed carving pumpkins.

So even though they are not great looking, every year we still carve a pumpkin. It’s a great tactile sensory project for children with ASD (Autism spectrum disorders). We sit our pumpkins outside on Halloween with a candle to let the kids in the area know that we are a home that will be giving out candy.

My candy is a mix of chocolate and tootsie pops (suckers for anyone in other parts of the world) and I like to add a little prize to the candy. I will buy bags of plastic animals, and pick up gently used toys (clean and disinfect them) at the second hand shops with their bags of happy meal toys. So along with candy they get a surprise wrapped in tissue shaped like little ghost.

This year I made little pumpkins to set around the house. Like these fabric pumpkins I made from a vintage table cloth.

I used twine to tie them off . Just take your material and measure out 8 inch length by 4 inch width.

Fold over and sew up one side. Turn back side out then sew bottom using a running stitch then pull and tie off with a knot, add stuffing (a lot) and do the same to the other end.

Then take your twine and tie off sections to create lines in your pumpkins to give them their shapes. You can add a face for a jack-o-lantern if you like. For a detailed video on how to make fabric pumpkins click here…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ls9wYb-B7Q there are several sites on line that give video instructions for this simple little craft that has been around for ages.

Remember, creating is about having fun, so no frustrations…just have fun with this, even if it’s your first time making one. Keep doing them until you are happy with what you come up with. Oh, and add a stem to the tops. Just go outside and search around for a branch and break off a piece to glue to the tops of your little pumpkins. Leaves are optional.

Pom Pom pumpkins are another super easy craft project. If you don’t have plastic pom pom makers (can buy on Amazon I think, never looked it up) you can make your own templates using an empty cereal box.

Just draw out a circle like a donut and cut out two pieces. Stack on top of each other then wrap yarn around the two discs.DSC03160.JPG

Once you have wrapped yarn completely around a couple of times it is ready to cut.

Cut down middle of two disc and keep cutting all around till you get to the end,

Now tie off.

Trim your pom poms to give them a circular shape and cut out eyes and nose from some black felt to glue on. Top off with a little branch stem and glue in place.

Clay pumpkins-  These little guys were my favorites to make. Just roll out some balls for pumpkins.

Use a toothpick or end of a paintbrush to add lines and add a tiny stem to the tops.

Make sure to shape your pumpkins in different sizes and shapes. Base the shapes on what you see out in your gardens.

Add a hole to the tops with a toothpick and add a little twig. I used grapevine twigs from my garden. They are curly like a pumpkin vine.

Once the clay dries you can paint and decorate your pumpkins. Clay is such a fun medium to work with. Hope this gives you all some ideas to start getting ready for October.

Happy Halloween adventures everyone.

  3. Thank you. I have those stems all over our back wall right now. There was one awhile back that looked like a sloth hanging out with the grape leaves.

      1. Thank you. I have also been having fun getting into the spirit of Fall. I went out the other day and bought some little things to put in my garden area under my gazebo. So happy the extreme heat behind here in Phoenix. We might get a couple more hot days here and there but anything under 100 degrees is nice to us.

      5. Right now we have a storm blowing in, we even had some rain early this morning. The wind is scary out there at the moment. There is even some flooding up north on one of the roads we use to get to Our little red house up there, they closed it down. As soon as the flash flooding stops they will reopen the roads. That’s Arizona weather for you.

      6. Huh, over here in Michigan, we always talk – Well at least you know what the Arizona weather is – hot and dry. But I guess not.

      7. Still really wet over here at the moment…which is rare for us. The thunder was so loud it shook the whole house. Think our cats are still under the bed. Storms over now but they say more rain is coming through tomorrow.

      8. Thing with Michigan the weather is very changeable it could have three different seasons within one day and the weather man’s typically wrong so it’s a weird kind of weather over this way but we definitely don’t have huge storms don’t really have earthquakes very few tornadoes and no worry on hurricanes or tsunamis just weird weather that changes frequently

    1. Thank you Renee. All the credit on my craft ideas come from my childhood and my Grandma Lil. She was Penecostal and did a lot of arts and craft projects with the church kids. I was not part of the church though, my mother’s side were not really religious and sometimes we would go to the Catholic church off and on when I was a kid. It was fun visiting Grandma with her art shed full of plaster crafts and art supplies. The kids in the photo are my daughter and son when they were little. They grow so fast. My daughter is 21 now and my son is 19.

    1. Oh…me too, I am from that generation. I remember Wonder woman, Casper, and I think Scooby Doo was even a mask. Usually we just got into our mother’s make up and dressed as clowns, cats and witches. One time I borrowed my Uncle’s black top hat for a costume. He lived behind my Nana’s house with his girlfriend and their baby girl. He is the uncle that was part of a bikers gang. They would have parties every weekend. We lived next door to my Nana so we were all at the parties. I would leave though when the fights started. Lot of drinking went on at those bar-b-que parties. They listened to John Cooger Mellen camp, Tom Petty, Creedence Clearwater and Bob Seger alot. My aunt loved Stevie Nicks and we would listen to her music all the time. I hated those plastic sheets that went with those mask, they were hot after awhile. The mask had that little hole everyone stuck their tongues out of, so funny,

These are all so cute! I love the fabric pumpkins. The different fabrics are so pretty. I’ll have to make some of those with the extra fabric scraps I have collecting dust in a drawer. 🙂 Thank you for linking to me! Your support means so much to me!
