Felting tiny pumpkins and streaming creepy movies.

“ Sometimes your heart needs more time to accept what your mind already knows.”

It doesn’t work, it just doesn’t work. Felting and streaming do not go hand in hand. They are not the best of friends, heck…they shouldn’t even be hanging out together. But me being me, I never learn. I have been trying to get these two to connect for the longest time. I can hear my husband now saying these words “ You are the most stubborn person is the world”. He always ends that with a laugh.

So what the heck am I trying to say here with this post anyway. Guess I am saying that if you want to protect your fingers just save needle felting for those times when you concentrate on just that, just the felting and not anything else. Needle felting is a painful craft if you aren’t careful.

The other night I decided to get all my needle felting supplies out and watch a series I heard about that was on Hulu (not getting anything by promoting that channel) it is called The Act and it’s a pretty creepy movie or should I write series. It’s pretty long.

It’s about a mother and daughter that take advantage of the system by faking illnesses. To be fair though, the daughter did not start that dishonesty, she was pushed into it by a very mentally unstable and evil (yep, I am using that word) mother.

There are evil mothers out there too, just as there are loving mothers, there are some bad ones as well.

This is the second time I am writing up this post because the first one I wrote I kind of went all over the place because that movie I guess triggered some old ugly memories of mine from my childhood. So if you are a son or daughter of a NPD or any personality disordered mother …DO NOT WATCH THAT MOVIE.

Here I was needle felting away and BAM I would accidentally stab myself in the finger. When I first started up this hobby of needle felting I would felt too hard, not realizing that you are suppose to gently jab the wool. I thought you had to poke hard to lock the wool in place. Now I know better. Still, watching a movie and even being extra gentle will cause injuries. You have to always have your eye on the project. It is kind of relaxing in away, just jabbing away until a shape takes form, and at the end of the day I love watching a good movie and crafting something along with that.

My husband walked into the room and looked at the screen and said “ How can you watch that?, it reminds me of your mother, it’s gotta remind you of her as well.” I looked up at my husband a little in shock and answered him back “What, no way, my mom was never this bad. I mean she had her moments and she did some pretty wicked stuff but this woman…wow, she is a BAD one.”

“Yeah, and if you didn’t have a father or Nana in your life like you did, this would have been a lot closer to your life then you think.” he said back.

I got goosebumps when he said that because he was right.

So I started writing up a post about that conversation and movie. In my original post I wrote up all the examples of why what my husband said was the truth. The many doctor visits and emergency room visits. The lies to me and other family members. The chaos and tragedies that always seem to happen in my mother’s homes and to the people around her. I wrote it all down along with a really nice DIY pumpkin craft.

That’s what happens when you are triggered and suffer PTSD, you never know when you will just spill it all out sharing a little TMI. Reading over what I wrote the next day (thankfully I didn’t hit the publish button) I scratched that post and am now rewriting this one.

I figured who wants to read a story about my ugly pass, you can watch one on Hulu if you like, and that one is bad enough. It is a sad and disturbing story, so skip it if you have lived in toxic environments. It will only hurt your heart and soul to go back down that road.

You have already been down that road. Better to move forward and look for better paths to take and explore. It happens to the best of us. We will see something that takes us back to an ugly moment from our past and if we are not careful we can get stuck back there once again.

When that happens, at that moment, think of something…anything, that you are happy about.Think of something that you are thankful and grateful about. Leave the past in the past. Otherwise ugly emotions and feelings start to take over your heart.

My aunt used to do this thing when I was a little girl, she would ask us what we experienced that day that made us smile or happy. It was something I would pass to my own two children when they were little “What was your favorite part about today?.”

I would also encourage my kids to tell me if anything bothered them as well. This way we could clear things up and communicate better with one another. If you are having a venting session with someone you love, don’t forget to end it on a positive. Like I wrote up above, it is very easy to get stuck in the ugly if we keep going back down that road. But every now and then a little vent doesn’t hurt either.

Okay, so back to this needle felting project because that is the most important lesson in this post. Doing the things that you love and sharing that with others. And even though I jabbed my finger a little now and then, I still had a lot of fun making these adorable little pumpkins. I always end up jabbing my finger, even when I am sitting at a table concentrating. Just be careful everyone.

Use pumpkins from your gardens and grocery stores as a guide to the different shapes and colors.

First you will need a variety of Fall colors in wool felt.

Take a pile and gently poke into a circle shape.

Jabbing diagonally until you start forming a ball shape.

It doesn’t take long to do these little wool balls.

Once you have your circles you can form them into pumpkins by poking lines down the centers all around your circle until it looks more like the shape of a pumpkin. Then poke a little hole at the top to add a stem.

We have grapes growing around our garden pool and the stems are perfect for a lot of my crafts. I love how curly they are.

This is an older photo of our garden grapes that was taken in the Spring. We have a pretty scary garden after the summer. Most things are dead and there is not a lot of green out there after a hot Phoenix summer.

Glue stems in place.

Now you have a bunch of fun little pumpkins to display around your shelves. You can even add faces for Jack-o-lanterns.

Oh, and if you want to watch a movie while doing this you have been warned. Still, it is nice creating and watching a good movie at the end of the day.

Here are a few movie suggestions to watch, just some fun Halloween movies from the past. All black and white classics except for one, about haunted houses and murder mysteries. I just love old houses and the shadows it produces in these old movies. No gore, just suspense. It was such a simpler time back then. Happy felting and streaming everyone.

House on Haunted hill.

The spiral staircase.

Terror in a haunted house.

The uninvited (1944)

Burnt offerings.

I would not even attempt to needle felt a Jack’O lantern like this. The artists who carved this is very talented.

I have been wanting to watch that series but haven’t had the time to sit down long enough to see it. I’m sorry it triggered some painful memories for you. That was a wonderful thing your aunt did! I try to do that with my daughter at bedtime but sometimes we both fall asleep too fast. 😁 I guess I should do it earlier, huh?

These pumpkins are adorable! I love the stems! They make the pumpkins look so primitive. Felting is on my bucket list of crafts to learn. 😊

    1. It’s a really good series but it is so creepy with how the mother manipulates everyone. There are a lot of us out there that have not so great experiences with our moms but that series is way extreme, that woman was so bad. Felting is fun once you get the hang of things and using the needles involved.

    1. That is the same story, the one where the daughter and boyfriend murdered the mother…so sad. Venting and getting it out is good every now and then. It is hard when you blog sometimes to separate the two. I want to keep this site positive of course but sometimes things just come out when you start writing. I made some cute felted flowers the other night. We actually had a storm last night and the thunder shook the whole house, it was so loud the cats ran under the beds and hid.

      2. I know, it is a disturbing story. If you have HBO they have a documentary on there called mommy deadly dearest, I think that is what it is called. We don’t have HBO all the time but I remember watching that first. Storm is gone now, just clouds. I am headed outside now, have a really messy garden to clean up from our summer months.
