It wouldn’t be a 12 days of Christmas crafts if I didn’t have at least one nailed it moment for you all and this craft was it. But as always, I have moved on and learned from my mistakes. Next time I will try not to repeat any of these mistakes I am about to share with you.
This craft project involves pom poms.
If you are a needle felter then you can make your own felt balls, if not you can buy them by the bags online or at most craft and hobby stores. You can also use little yarn pom poms. Felting little balls is pretty easy. Just form, poke, and keeping turning and poking your felt until you have the shape of a circle.
First you will need to make a coaster to glue the pom poms on. I used some old upholstery trim for my coaster. I just wrapped the trim, gluing down while wrapping into a spiral circle. This was a mess for me because I used too much glue.
It doesn’t look pretty when that happens, looks sloppy. You never want to see glue. Now the pom poms I am gluing on top will cover that mess but I also need a new glue gun, mine is dripping all over the place. Just dab some glue down, a tiny bit at a time, and hold in place with a clothes pin then continue while pinning down with a clothes pin until it dries. After you have finished making your coasters cut off excess trim or rope.
Now you can start adding your pom pom design.
Here is where I made my second mistake, actually a couple. I added way too much glue when gluing down my pieces to the coaster and some of the felt balls were not all the same size so it didn’t really balance well with the eyes.
It still worked as a coaster, just not what I saw in a coffee shop last year. My kids laughed when I said…”I can do that.” See I spoke too soon. Sometimes I have a bit too much confidence when crafting but please anyone out there that crafts, do not loose that “I can do that” drive in you. We all need to make mistakes, it is necessary to continue to grow and learn in life. Those first tries with anything always come out a little funky, looks a little weird and somewhat off but hey, at least we all gave it a go.
Now next time…
“I can definitely do that”.
I love the laughs I get out of my family when I try something and mess up. It is well worth it.I love laughs a lot more then perfection that’s for sure.
Might have another nailed it moment coming up soon and not because I think I can do it. It is all because I really don’t know where to get a gift for my daughter without traveling all the way to California, buying a ticket to Disneyland, waiting in a super long line, poking my head out every now and then to see if that line is actually moving, to finally getting up to the front only to be told “Sorry, we are all out of baby Yodas,” Yep, you just read that right, my full grown daughter wants a baby Yoda. Those days of waiting in long lines for Cabbage patch dolls (my childhood memories), tickle me Elmos and beannie babies never stops.
So you know where this is going…
“I can make you a better baby Yoda.” lets see what nailed it moment I come up with now. Maybe I will have some laughs for you all coming up soon. I am so behind, I better get to work on that baby Yoda, Christmas is only a few days away.
While I think about how to go about this, think I will sip on some hot cocoa. At least I always get that right. Thank you instant cocoa mixes. Hope you all get some nailed it moments because you know what they say…laughter is the best medicine. Have a wonderful Christmas and holiday season everyone.
