Something fun for you all to do with the kids while on Spring break, or any break at that matter. They have closed schools all around this world. It is so important to help keep those little ones mind occupied and not in places of worry. Try to keep their lives as normal as possible. Yeah, they know something is up, but no need to dwell on that. After 9/11 happened to keep our children (ages 2 and 4 at the time) happy we played vintage Disney (you know, Cinderella, Snow White…the good old days of Disney when Walt was around) and had the biggest birthday party for my daughter, everyone came. All us adults needed a 5 year old birthday to get back to living in happy times. I think I even face painted some of the adults faces that day. We all just needed some silliness at a time when our country lost so many.
So here’s some silliness for you all…pom pom bunnies. You will need some yarn, felt, glue, scissors, cardboard (use an empty cereal box), wiggle eyes or beads, tiny pink pom pom, medium sized white pom pom or cotton ball.
First you will have to make two card board discs. You can use small bottle tops as templates. You are drawing out two donuts and cutting out the centers.
Once you have cut out two cardboard disc Start wrapping yarn strands around the disc.
wrap yarn around the whole disc. I wrapped it around twice.
Once completely covered start cutting the center between the two discs. Cut all around the discs.
Then tie off center. I pull hard and double knot to make sure all the yarn is held in place.
Then pull discs away and trim pom poms into shapes for your bunny.
One large pom pom for the body, one medium pom pom for the head., and two small pom poms for the paws or little bunny legs. If you want all four legs , just make four. I just used the bunnies to hang over little baskets. You can use different sized lids for different sizes of template sizes. One time just for fun we traced a large plate and made a multi-colored pom pom ball. It was huge. The yarn colors I used for these bunnies were browns, grey, pink and white but you can use all kinds of colors to design your bunnies.
To make the ears I just drew out some ear shapes on a piece of paper to get an idea of what size and shape I wanted. Cut the pieces out and trace onto felt then glue two pieces together.
Then I sewed the ends to shape the ears.
After you have finished your felt ears you can start gluing all your pieces together. Glue the body to the head and ears to the head first.
Add two pom poms to the front.
Then glue a white pom pom to the back.
Add eyes and a pretty bow. I used little black beads as eyes but you can use buttons, or wiggle eyes too.
Make several bunnies to give out as gifts. I think everyone could use one of these bunnies now. Should call these cheer up bunnies.
I love real bunnies of course but I think it is so important that we don’t just buy them for Easter. Poor bunnies every where end up being in shelters because once they get big and become a problem the children loose interest. They take too much work to take care of them. Make yarn bunnies instead if your children ask for a real one. I know, it isn’t the same but at least they don’t poop everywhere. Hey, we all need some laughs right now. Have fun with this one you guys. Before you know it, you will have bunnies all around your house. Play bunny hide and seek. Instead of looking for eggs, search for bunnies. Make different colored bunnies and turn them into a lesson on colors.

Thank you Tanya, can’t wait to see them. I have to head over to your site soon. We are headed out the door right now. Outdoor things, as long as no crowds. The Costco by our house right now has 75 people waiting in line and they are not even opened yet. They are being handed golden tickets for toilet paper and are only allowed one set per shopper. Toilet paper is flying off the walls over there, meanwhile at the store around the corner from us they had a whole section in the back.

Thank you, wish I could take the full credit but pom pom animals have been around since the 70’s or early, maybe the 30’s…I don’t know. They were fun to make and the kids will love them in their baskets.

I have pom pom makers which I have only just used for the first time after some years having them. You have inspired me. I have a feeling I will be making 2 or 3 of these. 🙂

Awww…that is so sweet. I flatten the large pom pom and trimmed and cut it into a shape of a rabbit body, and the same thing with the face. There are so many fun little animals you can make with pom poms. I have another post coming up next week on pom pom Easter chicks with pipe cleaner legs.

Today I am trying to catch up with some other sites and also home stuff and now preparing for this cities chaos that I fear will only get worse the more people panic. You are 100% correct, the people have no reason to go into a panic and some of this stuff they are fighting over is ridiculous. Careful though, with everyone sick around the world, the factories are closed and there will be other shortages.

I have been lucky to go into a shop and buy what I need, with the exception of hand gel. But I still have hand gel from last year before all this started.
If we are going to be short there’s nothing I can do if its not there.

That is true and regular soap is good too, in fact it is better to wash with soap and water but hand gel is great for when we can’t. There are kids making gel here and selling them on their streets like they used to do with lemonade stands.

My bunny is rather round, the first one I made. I didn’t do any trimming, as I wasn’t sure. I only trimmed the tail after fluffing it up a bit, before gluing on. But I feel I am looking at a rabbit. I will trim on my next one. 🙂

That’s the fun part about creating, each piece will have it’s own personality. That first bunny of yours was just meant to be a chunky one, so cute. I added the extra information on trimming pom poms into other shapes because that is how we soft sculpt these into little critters. Kind of like how gardeners shape bushes into certain shapes by how they cut them up. Most important thing is to just have fun with it and know that each piece will look different. The more you make, the better you will get with designing your animals.

O my goodness, I don’t think I’ve seen cuter bunnies than yours! What a fantastic yet simple idea. We are waiting to see if Ireland is going into lockdown, so far just the schools, colleges, restaurants and pubs are closed yet still many people are getting ready for not-so-typical work day tomorrow! Please stay safe over there as well. We also just got word that all our schools in our state are now closed. The restaurants are still open though. We were out this weekend before they closed the schools and I think issued a state of emergency for the whole country, which they have done now. So far our family in Italy is doing okay, but a little stir crazy. I don’t know about family in the UK, we have an aunt that is very sick and has cancer so she is in Chemo over in the UK. Last I heard she was hoping to get back to the Canary island but we all know what traveling is like now and she is in no way okay to travel. I feel like I am in a nightmare sometimes, everything is surreal and so strange. When we went to an outside market everything seemed okay, and no one seemed too concerned. We left when people started coming. We went very early and we were the only ones around beside the employees. plus this is away from the city where the community cases were reported but we all know how that works…it spreads. The grocery stores here have lost their minds, well the people that is. They are going early and waiting in the back of stores when shipments come in, then they grab crates of items to buy like potatoes, instead of a bag which is normal. Most of these people will end up throwing away some of this stuff because that many potatoes for one person will rot unless they know how to can them. These are people who live in small apartments in the city. Where are they putting all these items and toilet paper I wonder.
