Shopping adventures at a Teddy bear store

Back in March, before the lock downs, before the numbers and anxiety, I decided it would be nice to stop by a little shop I sometimes will visit a few times a year to get my Teddy bear fix. Yeah, that’s right…I love teddy bears. I think they are so cute. Although I haven’t bought any since I started having children because, well, as all you parents out there know, children are expensive to raise. They are all grown up now but mostly I make little toys now whenever I need something cute. You see I can’t just like your ordinary Teddy bears, no I have to love the artists bears. Oh, and I love Steiff too…doesn’t everyone.

Anyway, there is a little store here in my area that just happens to sell lots of Steiff and artists bears for all you teddy connoisseur. It is called Bears and more.

Back in my early years before I had kids I used to work in retail and one of the Mall employees that worked across from the shop I managed was also a teddy bear collector. She would stop by our shop to check out our Boyd bears when we got the orders in. She liked the fancy artsy bears like me as well. Well, eventually she opened her own teddy bear shop and filled it with all kinds of cool things.

Her and her daughter-in-law run the shop. It is a family business, which you all know how much I support that.

Even if you are not a collector of bears there are other items in this store to see. Bonus points for having a little free library on their wooden porch. All you husbands will know what this means, a nice shady place to sit and read a free book while your wives are having fun shopping inside. Dates with our husbands sometimes involve teddy bear shopping.

The neighborhood where the bear shop is, is filled with all kinds of historic homes that have been turned into small businesses.

The streets are lined with beautiful trees. It is a nice change from the desert landscapes we are normally used to around here

Everyone is very friendly and it always feels like you are visiting old friends when you stop by this old neighborhood. Some of the shops even have sale tables outside, so lots of fresh air and sunshine.

I believe this will be a way to shop in the future when the lock downs start opening up, which has already started in my state. I also believe bartering will be something that will  become popular because of the shortages. In fact, the reason I picked this area at the time was because of it being mostly outside shopping. I started doing  this outdoor shopping way back in December when I first started hearing about the virus going on over seas.

Inside the bear shop there are several rooms set up with different products.

It is a house that has been turned into a retail shop. Most of the homes in this area have been turned into retail shops.

There is a kitchen filled with all kinds of antique and collectible kitchen gadgets and decor.

Like this case filled with old postcards and letters from long ago…how tempting it would be to sit there reading through all these old letters from the past.

They even had a corner filled with sewing and craft supplies. Like stopping off at grandma’s place for some buttons and threads. It just feels like home when you step into this shop. I loved talking to the owner about our mall days and my son and daughter later told me it reminded them of that series Stranger days where all the teens hung out in the mall and worked there. I told them Mall adventures back in the 80’s and 90’s were so fun.

This was one of my favorite rooms at the shop. I have always been a big fan of traditional and well made toys. Pretend play, science, games, creative play, or just a snuggle toy to love.

This shop reminds me of the European toy shops my husband would take me to during all our trips to Europe to visit his family in Italy. I still have some Italian plush toys from long ago in my old Lane hope chest. When the kids were babies I decorated their nurseries with Steiff and Italian plush toys.

They even have old Fisher price. Vintage Fisher price are the best toys in my opinion for children for early childhood development.

And look at this, remember these.

I ended up buying some small items. A bunny cake pan, some wool felt to sculp with, and a couple Styrofoam eggs to make felted wool eggs with, although I still haven’t done any new felting projects in a few weeks. I have to get on with that hobby of mine and while I am at it I need to make a teddy bear too. Been way to long since I made one of my bears. As you all know, I love soft sculpture.

So whether you are a crafter, teddy bear artist, collector, shopper, or just want to visit with people (after the lock downs of course) and take a day to go back to days from the past, then the bear shop is just that place. Happy Shopping adventures everyone. As soon as I get those eggs done I will share them with you, nailed it moments and all. Some of my finished projects are all in photos above. Hobbies keep us all sane I always tell my kids.

What a lovely place! I don’t think I’d be able to pry my daughter away from all the teddy bears, but I’d still love to pay it a visit one day.

    1. It is like visiting a bunch of family members in their homes and then buying things from them. I just love the old windows, doors and structure of the homes. Oh, and of course the pretty items they stock the stores with in the neighborhood. It very quiet and peaceful with birds chirping and shading with trees everywhere. Different way to go shopping, nothing like the big city or Malls.

What a cute area and shop! I don’t have any teddy bears at home now that the kids are grown. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, the good folks in my neighbourhood have propped teddy bears to look out of their windows to cheer up the kids walking by! I put up some random soft toys as I couldn’t find any bears in the house 🙂

    1. That is such a cool idea, we don’t have that in our neighborhood. I have noticed some people putting up Christmas lights though.

    1. I know, so much fun. Think I will always stay a kid at heart. I think soft sculptor is so adorable, like having a room full of little critters that you don’t have to feed or clean up after. Of course I don’t have any rooms like that in my home, we have real cats to take up those spaces. My kids each have a cat of their own and I rescued one when no one else would take her.

      1. Oh that’s such a nice way to teach kids to be kind and gentle for animals from their childhood. These are the best toys for them and indirectly they are learning so much 😊

I much prefer shopping in these types of stores rather than malls. I’m hoping for more of the former post-you-know-what.

Wow, what a lovely place to stock up on teddy bears! I wouldn’t be able to leave empty handed. I haven’t been to the shops for more than two months now. Most of the non-food places are still closed in Sligo, but I can’t wait for book shops to open. Thanks for sharing and have a good day, my friend 😊 Aiva

    1. Thank you Aiva, I have also been inside for two months. They have opened our state up this month so we are planning a little road trip way up in the mountains where the cases are really low (around 19). We have to check on Our Little Red House. We will keep our distance from neighbors, no cookie baskets like I normally do in the Spring up there, so strange having to do this now. I will be handing out home made masks though. Have a great day too and I hope you get to visit a book store soon, those are the best. Cheri

    1. Thank you Joanne, happy to hear there is another Teddy bear lover out there. Everyone should have a teddy bear, at least one somewhere. Hope you are safe and all is well in your part of the world.

  9. Fabulous place and I love your crafts. I was big into bears in the mid 90s but didn’t have much money over after bills and stepchildren. I’ve three collector bears from that time. Since my injury in 2007 I sew and craft a lot, I’ve a lovely collection of vintage toy books as well as my own soft toys. Xo 🐻 ❤

    1. Teddy bears used to be so popular. I think now mostly Alpaca’s, hedgehogs, foxes, owls, and even sloths are the popular soft toys these days. I think stuffed animals with giant eyes are so cute.

      2. I love their giant eyes. I found a pink sloth with giant eyes once from TY and I was going to give it to one of our neighbor’s girls for the b’day but my daughter saw it and loved it so much, she got it. Ty uses a fabric that is so soft, like a fluffy silk. I sometimes will come across Mohair for my little teddies I sew and that is always great find.

  10. I enjoyed to visiting your blog. Very nice information.
