Back in March, before the lock downs, before the numbers and anxiety, I decided it would be nice to stop by a little shop I sometimes will visit a few times a year to get my Teddy bear fix. Yeah, that’s right…I love teddy bears. I think they are so cute. Although I haven’t bought any since I started having children because, well, as all you parents out there know, children are expensive to raise. They are all grown up now but mostly I make little toys now whenever I need something cute. You see I can’t just like your ordinary Teddy bears, no I have to love the artists bears. Oh, and I love Steiff too…doesn’t everyone.
Anyway, there is a little store here in my area that just happens to sell lots of Steiff and artists bears for all you teddy connoisseur. It is called Bears and more.
Back in my early years before I had kids I used to work in retail and one of the Mall employees that worked across from the shop I managed was also a teddy bear collector. She would stop by our shop to check out our Boyd bears when we got the orders in. She liked the fancy artsy bears like me as well. Well, eventually she opened her own teddy bear shop and filled it with all kinds of cool things.
Her and her daughter-in-law run the shop. It is a family business, which you all know how much I support that.
Even if you are not a collector of bears there are other items in this store to see. Bonus points for having a little free library on their wooden porch. All you husbands will know what this means, a nice shady place to sit and read a free book while your wives are having fun shopping inside. Dates with our husbands sometimes involve teddy bear shopping.
The neighborhood where the bear shop is, is filled with all kinds of historic homes that have been turned into small businesses.
The streets are lined with beautiful trees. It is a nice change from the desert landscapes we are normally used to around here
Everyone is very friendly and it always feels like you are visiting old friends when you stop by this old neighborhood. Some of the shops even have sale tables outside, so lots of fresh air and sunshine.
I believe this will be a way to shop in the future when the lock downs start opening up, which has already started in my state. I also believe bartering will be something that will become popular because of the shortages. In fact, the reason I picked this area at the time was because of it being mostly outside shopping. I started doing this outdoor shopping way back in December when I first started hearing about the virus going on over seas.
Inside the bear shop there are several rooms set up with different products.
It is a house that has been turned into a retail shop. Most of the homes in this area have been turned into retail shops.
There is a kitchen filled with all kinds of antique and collectible kitchen gadgets and decor.
Like this case filled with old postcards and letters from long ago…how tempting it would be to sit there reading through all these old letters from the past.
They even had a corner filled with sewing and craft supplies. Like stopping off at grandma’s place for some buttons and threads. It just feels like home when you step into this shop. I loved talking to the owner about our mall days and my son and daughter later told me it reminded them of that series Stranger days where all the teens hung out in the mall and worked there. I told them Mall adventures back in the 80’s and 90’s were so fun.
This was one of my favorite rooms at the shop. I have always been a big fan of traditional and well made toys. Pretend play, science, games, creative play, or just a snuggle toy to love.
This shop reminds me of the European toy shops my husband would take me to during all our trips to Europe to visit his family in Italy. I still have some Italian plush toys from long ago in my old Lane hope chest. When the kids were babies I decorated their nurseries with Steiff and Italian plush toys.
They even have old Fisher price. Vintage Fisher price are the best toys in my opinion for children for early childhood development.
And look at this, remember these.
I ended up buying some small items. A bunny cake pan, some wool felt to sculp with, and a couple Styrofoam eggs to make felted wool eggs with, although I still haven’t done any new felting projects in a few weeks. I have to get on with that hobby of mine and while I am at it I need to make a teddy bear too. Been way to long since I made one of my bears. As you all know, I love soft sculpture.
So whether you are a crafter, teddy bear artist, collector, shopper, or just want to visit with people (after the lock downs of course) and take a day to go back to days from the past, then the bear shop is just that place. Happy Shopping adventures everyone. As soon as I get those eggs done I will share them with you, nailed it moments and all. Some of my finished projects are all in photos above. Hobbies keep us all sane I always tell my kids.
