Dollar day do over….glass vase.

“If you buy stuff you love, regardless of era or price, your home will be a true reflection of you.”

A few weeks ago we treated ourselves with fresh flowers for our kitchen table. I usually don’t add this to our shopping lists because fresh flowers are expensive and they just end up dying. I am the oldest child in my family so I was raised to be the practical one. The youngest are always so care free and fun to be around. Oldest children are in my opinion more reserved and too serious at times. My husband is the youngest child, he is always about fun and adventures. Not that I don’t like my own adventures and fun sometimes, I do. Being raised as Tom Boy we make the perfect match for that. No one is to blame for how this all plays out. If you are a parent of more then one child you know how it goes with that first born. A little nervous and insecure that first time with being responsible with a new life. By the time another comes around, us parents have relaxed some about those little adorable human beings. Anyway, being a first born I am the one who buys socks and a first aide kit as Christmas gifts…just being practical. Flowers are really special treats and boy, did we ever need some this past month.

I splurged and bought a bouquet of flowers. I forgot to take photos. This is the downside of not having a cell phone. Most of the time, no one ever knows the yummy home made meals I make, the pretty things I put out in my home when I am feeling creative and rarer of all is a photo of me. I never liked being in front of cameras. My place has always been in the back of a camera. I guess I follow the Native American way of things from the past. Their beliefs that cameras steal a little bit of our soul every time we get our photo taken. I know creepy huh?, but look at the epidemic of self love around the world…makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

There are many photos of me as a child though and the one a year I take with the family so my kids can have memories of our years together. These photos I am sharing with you are not of the bouquet I bought from the store and it was pretty too. Just have to use your imagination on that one, which would put my photo to shame I believe, our imagination has so much more to offer us. Plus, my garden did not produce many flowers this summer and with the pandemic I didn’t really have a chance to plant any because we mostly stayed home.

When I got home after my flower bouquet purchase, I realized I didn’t have a vase big enough to put them in. I used an empty glass mason jar instead. It still looked pretty. So the next month when I went on a dollar day shopping trip at our local thrift store the first thing I put on my list was a large vase.

This is the only one I could find that was okay, but it was so plain. I decided when I got home that I would repaint it.

Whoops, was in a hurry to get this project done before the heat came in, later that afternoon. It is still hot here in the desert during September, no Fall for us. I did take this photo of the process of painting and just for laughs I set one of my glass lamps next to it. The vase was clear like the lamp, although not as dirty. Lots of things have to be cleaned out in our summer garden clean up days.

Here it is, matches my kitchen better. I painted it white. This month’s dollar day do over was kind of quick.

As soon as I put out this vase, of course Alley cat wasn’t far behind. She jumped up on the table to investigate. She loves natural plants. When she escapes outside she just goes around smelling pots of flowers and plants of mine.

Poor little Alley, think she is down some because I was not around for awhile. She cries when I leave the room.

Again, no fresh flowers from my garden, except these.

I love the bright pink colors so they work for me, until I can start growing some again.

Things are slowly started to come back. The night blooming Jasmine is still coming out. It is getting cooler in the evenings here, like 70-80 degrees so I can go swimming at night when the Jasmine is in bloom but I am not smelling it that well. The smoke coming in from the states with several wildfires everywhere has messed up everyone’s sinuses.I can smell the Jasmine up close but I used to be able to smell it just stepping outside.I smell smoke sometimes, it smells like a campfire along with a bar-b-que. Everyone is having sinus issues now. The smoke was not out there this morning, the day I am writing this and I have noticed this the past few days. That’s good.

I pick Jasmine a day after it blooms to dry. Later I add this to my goat’s milk (melt and pour) soap. I want to start adding this dry flower mixture to hand made paper. I started experimenting with paper over the summer. Just another project to add to my busy schedule. It is good though, to have hobbies and do things that bring Joy.

Okay, that’s my dollar day project this month. I still have a box of unfinished projects so I hope to have another fun project for you next month. Happy second hand shopping and re-purposing . I saw a funny quote the other day…”We aren’t hoarders, we’re repurposers.” Kind of fits with my lifestyle a bit.

Those flowers are beautiful but I really think you need to buy another bouquet on your next shopping trip since that was the reason for the vase. I do know how you feel about spending the money like that because even though I am not first born I am practical like that. Actually my husband who is a first born is more likely to spend money on things we don’t need.

    1. It is good that one of you is a spender, it balances things out, Most of the first borns I know seem to be so serious, might just be something in my extended family and my husband’s family too. Seems all the babies get spoiled too. Every family unit favors the babies in our family. Everyone laughs about it but I think it does bother some of us first borns and the middle children. In our family middle children basically just get ignored. Right now I have a cousin who is a middle child, she is really happy with social media right now, it is her world. She is making up all that loss attention she never got as a child, going around and starting conflicts online. Maybe she is bored, maybe she is angry, who knows, but it is so sad. Such hate now online with some people. My cousin and her sister (the baby) don’t really speak to each other now. I just wish everyone would get along.

It’s sad to se that divisiveness in families. My sisters and I have gotten very close as adults and I am so thankful for them. My daughters are all very close as well. My husband only has one brother and they haven’t spoken in probably 15 years or more. Having such a good relationship with my sibs it’s hard for me to understand theirs.

      2. I love hearing stories like yours, so good to know that there are families and siblings that stick together. That is sad about your husband and his brother. I believe it is a generational thing when families are not close and love each other as they should. Parents should encourage siblings to be close, so sad when this doesn’t happen. I remember seeing a photo of you with your daughters and you all look so happy, so pretty. You can tell when a family loves one another. I have to visit your site later. Just got online real quick to look something up.
