Fixing up an old country desk.

Slowly, slowly things are getting done. I had a list of items I needed for the small room up north at Our Little Red House and I was on the hunt for these items from second hand shops. We have been escaping the city as much as possible and we needed a desk in the back room for my son and daughter when they are doing their online work and school from the university.

You all know my rule when it comes to furniture that goes up north. Because we don’t live there, we save our money and buy second hand furniture to keep debt down. I try (try is the magic word here) and mostly we have been able to stick to our budget but there are situations where we have to buy something new.

Anyway, my budget is under $20. I went on a hunt to find a desk and chair for under $20 and guess what? I did it…I am surprised too. In fact, this set was under $10.

Just needed a little TLC.

For some reason I have noticed that second hand furniture is always missing their hardware. I believe they are stripping hardware off and either the ones donating are keeping it or the second hand shops are bagging them up to sell as well.

Didn’t matter, because one of my go to items when out shopping are knobs. I have been collecting knobs for years now. I use them on furniture remakes and other home decor projects.

First I painted the top of the desk white. It had some damage on the top. I could have sanded it down but I was pressed on time and we had to head up north a day after I bought this.

After I painted the top I added some knobs.

So here it is all finished.

Pretty easy remake, just needed to be cleaned, knobs added and some paint. Which I had on hand anyway that was left over.

I love shopping for the new stuff too but sometimes it is nice checking out those used items that tend to get tossed a lot. Better to see what is headed to the dump and save what we can. And anyway furniture is made of real wood back from back in the day. Vintage furniture last longer in the big picture of things.

Now we need a bed frame, and some shelves for the dining room area. Guess another challenge is on. We will see. Happy second hand hunting everyone.

    1. Thank you, I was so happy when I found one. Isn’t that nice when things just show up when you need them. My husband and I always say that is a God thing. We are always given gifts every day.

      2. Thank you Wendi. I still need to read your frugal book. I asked my daughter to upload your book since she just bought a Kindle. We just got back from up north and now she has it here in the city, she just needs to charge it she said. Hopefully I will read it soon. I did leave a link in my November updates that will be posted tomorrow, just got through writing it and a couple if Blogmas posts for the week. Lets see if I can do that. Posting something everyday might turn out to be a little hard. We will see.

  3. Looks so good and the design of the knobs remind me of the Dutch ceramic tiles and china they make. You are so versatile and talented and I can’t wait to see what’s next 😉

Hope you’re doing well and that things are calming down a bit now in your area!!
Big hug and stay safe 🙂

    1. Awww…thanks. We are back in the city and had a nice break up north. The weather here is very calm so it wasn’t cold up north like we thought it would be. We didn’t need to set a fire in the cookstove the whole time we were there. When we got back in the city we went grocery shopping the next day and we are back to empty shelves it seems. There were no whole chickens to buy, we don’t do turkeys. What a strange time we are dealing with. Even toilet paper is back to being non existent here, at some stores that is. There are rumors going around, lets hope they are just that. It is quiet in the city, no fireworks so that is nice. Here in the states there is a tension and now both sides are at it, even on next door sites where neighbors help each other out they are being mean. We started decorating for the holidays early, hoping this brings some cheer to some scary times. Even some of our neighbors are starting to get extreme, which is the scariest thing of all. In extreme I mean Virus and political hate. My husband and I are always saying we just want to stay away from those subjects but some people just seem so angry and that is all they want to talk about. It is the craziest thing I have seen. I used to read books on the history of World War 2 and always wondered how neighbors, friends and family could turn on each other and now it seems like we are all kind of living it in a way. Just keep those most loyal and kind close to you, and hopefully things will start getting back to a calm and peaceful environment,

    2. Whoops sent my message too soon, a little bit of a rant there. I wanted to add a Happy holiday season for you and Frank. I can’t wait to see your tree this year. You guys have the best trees over there. Anyway, I do hope things get better in the following months. Have a very happy and peaceful Holiday season and stay healthy, happy and warm this Winter.
