Remember when I did a dollar day challenge when I had you guys pick which item for me to redo?. The most votes were for a wooden tool tray make over.
I still have a whole box of treasures to make pretty again. One of those items was this old beat up Topiary. Remember that?.
First I removed all the old faux pine tree clippings.
I was shocked with how small the Styrofoam balls were when I stripped it bare.
I wasn’t sure if I could make this look pretty again. Have you ever done that, start working on a project thinking “Yeah, this is going to look great.” and then you start second guessing yourself wondering if you made a mistake taking something apart once you start seeing the mess you created. Can’t really put it back together the way it came once undone.
It was a challenge but I had to finish what I started. I had a whole bag of mismatched faux flowers that I had purchased from the bargain bins and dollar stores over the years. In my country we have so many thrift stores that most states have a center where they take all those items that don’t sale to a huge warehouse where they pour everything into blue bins and people buy things by the pound.
You roll your shopping cart up to the weighing area and they subtract the weight of the cart and just add the weight of the items in the cart. It’s a little over a dollar a pound. I haven’t been there since the pandemic because it gets so packed and people don’t really follow directions here well in this city. They crowd and some even fight, not a lot with the fighting but some people take their bargain shopping serious. Anyway, I had a giant bag of faux flowers that I collected one day shopping at the bargains bins and finally had a free day to do something with that giant bag of flowers. This is what I came up with…
I went back and forth with adding a nest to the top or keeping it plain.
I had some dollar store decorations from an after Christmas sale where I got 90% off some items. I thought it would be nice to include them in this make over. I tried changing the color of the bird but it looks better as a cream color. Maybe I will try to do a chalk/aged look with the other bird and see how that comes out. I don’t like the glitter look and these clip on birds are full of glitter. This bird remake is more folk art then soft looking.
Which was not the effect I was going for.
When ever you do any floral arrangements remember to separate all the colors and flowers you will be using. I start with larger flowers then work in small flowers to fill in the spaces. Making sure to balance everything out.
First I covered the Styrofoam balls with faux moss. Before gluing anything down make sure the placement of the flowers is where you really want it to be. You can always pull out the flowers to start over but it leaves a big hole to fix again if glued in place. Just take your time and enjoy the whole process of arranging the flowers one at a time.
Okay, that’s one down and many more to go. I either give these finished items out to others as gifts, barter at a trade shop with some of my creations (trade for books and gifts) or donate back to the world. I am still working on that dollar day do over from last month where I am trying to turn my daughter’s old sweater into an Alpaca. So far I am failing. I need to draw up a new pattern because the other pattern I designed looks like a seal, not an Alpaca. The only reason I know this is because my daughter walked by my stuffed creation the other day and got really excited saying…
“Awww…what a cute seal, can I have this mom?.”
I gave her one of my mom eyebrow expressions like what the heck was she talking about.
“That’s not a seal, it’s an Alpaca.” I said back
“Hmmm…well, I like it as a seal, can I have it” she asked
“Of course.” I said defeated and added…
“But at least let me add some eyes to the poor thing.”
So back to the drawing board for my Alpaca challenge. I will share with you all this whole process when I am finally finished. We all need some laughs and the process of creating something new comes with many, funny… nailed it moment laughs.
Happy second hand make overs everyone. Go out there and try to save the broken things, Believe me there are plenty of them out there. They just need a little TLC. Pretty up the world one item at a time.
