Mother’s Day will be here in America before you know it and I thought I share with you all a fun DIY I did the other week when I made pretty little birds using play doughs that I mixed up in my kitchen.
I made salt dough hearts and cornstarch birds. They are perfect as ornaments or to hang up in your windows in your bedrooms.
First you will need to make the dough. I used cornstarch for this DIY but you can use the easier salt dough version if you like.
Cornstarch dough:
1/2 cup of cornstarch
1 cup of baking soda
3/4 cup of water
Mix ingredients, and once dissolved in water transfer to pan and slowly heat up. Put your pan on medium heat and keep stirring until mixture starts forming a ball of dough, then remove from pan and cool on parchment paper. When it is still a little warm knead the dough. Make sure to store in air tight container when not in use.
After you have kneaded your dough, roll out and use a bird template or a cookie cutter to cut out your bird shapes. I traced out a bird shape I had from a card I had onto heavy cardboard to use as my template.
Don’t forget to poke a hole to hang your birds from.
Place cut out birds onto drying rack for a day. After they have dried sand the edges around the birds.
After dry you can paint or decoupage fabric onto them.
I collect vintage fabric prints and will use them in my crafts or photos. Sometimes I will come across vintage bedsheets with flowers and unusual colors. A whole sheet of fabric can be made into so many things. Curtains, pincushions, tiny toys, and so many craft projects.
For wings I drew out hearts and wing shapes.
Some people are not comfortable or confident with their painting skills and that is where decoupaging comes in hand. There are so many pretty varieties when it comes to fabric designs.
After you are finished decorating, add yarn or wire to hang your birds from.
You can use different colors of yarns or twine.
Here are some other ways to use your little birds for home decor or Mother’s Day gifts:
Make a bird banner and add tiny pom poms in between each bird.
Poke a wooden skewer into your birds before drying and use as garden picks.
Glue onto a hand made card.
Add to a shadow box frame and include faux flowers around your bird.
Glue a magnet to the back and write a special message or personalize with your mom’s name.
Turn into a key chain.

We are now fully vaccinated, so I am a little less apprehensive about shopping, etc. But until more people get vaccinated, I’ll still be on the alert!

These birds are so beautiful and they would make a perfect gift. Mother’s Day in Ireland falls in March, unlike the American or European Mother’s Day, which is held in May. That’s why we get to celebrate it twice every year. Have a good day. Aiva 🙂

Darn, my reply disappeared. My computer is acting weird. I’m the same way now when it comes with being online. There is just too many things we have to deal with now days for us to make time for our hobbies and blogging is one of my hobbies. I love meeting and communicating with people around the world. Right now I’m just so busy and also worried about things in the world. It’s hard to go to a place of positivity when writing a fun DIY post or anything about our Arizona adventures. People are struggling everywhere, people are sad, there are lock downs everywhere, sick ones, shortages. Seems strange to write a post on how nice everything. When we look a little further into these posts we all realize we are all struggling right now with everything we are dealing with. Blogging is a great distraction when it comes to real world things. I don’t really know. So far, and it has been months now, they are very hard and nothing is falling apart. Once dry they remind me of a resin like material. I decoupaged mine so that helps keep them stronger I suppose. I usually do salt doh and those can chip away over the years. The cinnamon doh ornaments my daughter made when she was 5 are still around and she is 23 now.
