A sweet summer time treat .

Food has gone up so much lately. Starting to feel a lot like the 1970’s. Now I know why my parents were so scared back then. I was really little but I do remember having to move in with my Nana to save money.

Even though food prices are going up there are still ways to stay frugal when planning out your weekly meals.

I always buy the bargain bananas from the back of the store. Three large bundles of bananas cost less then $1.50. That’s a lot of bananas. We use everything on the bananas. Even the skins go to our chickens.

I chop up the bananas to freeze into small pieces. Then I store them in a large freezer bag to be used later for healthy cookie treats, muffins and our favorite, which I am going to share with you all today…ice cream.

You will need:

Frozen banana pieces.

Ice cubes

1 teaspoon honey

1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional)

1/2 cup of water or some sort of milk. Either skim, whole, rice, almond or soy milk.

Cherries (optional)

Strawberries (optional)

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until you get an ice cream consistency. Sometimes if I have plums, pears, or peaches that are getting too ripe I will cut them up into smaller pieces and throw them into the mixture as well. I won’t add vanilla extract if there is majority of fruit to the mixture. You can make this into a smoothie too, just add more ice and liquid ingredients like milk or yogurt.

It’s an easy treat to make and it doesn’t cost a lot to make which is the best thing. If you want more of an ice cream flavor then add extra vanilla extract. Add walnuts and chocolate chips as a topping after you are done blending your ice cream. Even better…add fresh strawberries as a topping. Freeze your ice cream for later. It’s better eaten fresh of course, especially if you like soft serve ice cream textures. Once you freeze this it becomes more like a banana sorbet. Just leave out to thaw for awhile for a softer texture, like 30 minutes in the refrigerator.

Now that summer is here we experiment with all kinds of frozen treats. Lemon ice, watermelon frozen ice cream, and frozen fruits like grapes or berries. Ice cream is a delicious treat but you have to be very careful with what you buy now days when it comes to all it’s harsh chemicals and ingredients. Sometimes we will buy ice cream on sale from the stores as a once in awhile treat. Making your own frozen treats from fresh fruit in your kitchen or from your garden is a much kinder way to treat ourselves as well as our environment.

  1. Love this article, frugal spending all the way is what I say. I do not think badly of our Uncle Scrooge. He is incredibly generous in reality, Don’t be afraid to splurge, though (when the time is right). Giving is also good.

    1. You’re so sweet, thank you. It is so much more healthier for you too. I mean, I love regular ice cream too but it is not really good for us to each so much and every time I go into the stores I see they are adding more and more harmful ingredients. I have no idea what that is about but all those ingredients are so bad. Prices are going up like crazy every too, hard to have sweet treats when food prices are going up. Sugar is exploding. Look into storing some of that up if you can or looking for alternatives like honey and other sweeteners before they explode in price too.
