I shared this recipe before in one of my updates post. It’s my Nana’s salsa recipe. I make it all through the year, especially during the cold and flu season. Whenever anyone gets the sniffles or seems to have sinus issues ( here in Arizona allergy season is rough) I will make a big bowl of this for the whole family to eat. Start your children out early when introducing healthy meals. My Nana introduced me to pickled herrings when I was a toddler. I love them to this day.
1 large can of whole peeled tomatoes
2 small cans of tomato sauce
two bundles of green onions
1 bundle of cilantro
1 yellow pepper and two jalapenos (optional)
Pock holes into peppers and boil until soft, let cool then cut open and remove seeds. This part is totally optional for anyone out there who can not tolerate spicy and hot foods. If you just add 1 pepper (no seeds) then I would add a yellow pepper or one jalapeno. The hotter something is, the more your eyes will water and your sinuses will be able to clear up…at least this is what my Nana always said.
Cut whole tomatoes into tiny pieces then add tomato sauce. Dice up cilantro and green onions into small pieces and add to tomato salsa, stir, then add peppers if you like it spicy. Refrigerate afterwards.
It should last about a week as long as you keep it in a glass mason jar in the fridge. You will know it has gone bad if it smells like tomato wine…all you moms out there know what I mean. There are no added chemicals or ingredients in this home made salsa so it wont last as long as the ones you buy off the shelf in the big chain stores. I love all salsa so I buy those too.
We read labels all the time. What we are finding is that the ready made food items off the shelves are adding more ingredients that are bad for us. What the heck our we all putting into our bodies, or should I write…what are they putting into us.
I don’t care how many stickers and pretty packaging these items come in that say Organic, safe, healthy, fat free, sugar free, natural, real ingredients etc…I could go on and on, I still don’t trust it and rather make food as close as God intended it to be as possible.
Hope you all like this simple salsa recipe. It would be better to use your own tomatoes from your garden but we have to use what we have and try to do the best we can without ingesting too many harsh chemicals. Buying local ingredients from your area is always better.
