In the garden…we got some edibles.

We are happily surprised our garden produced some food. We planted late and weren’t sure if we were doing everything right as we are used to different conditions where we used to live. The rain showers helped a lot, so thankful for that.

I have been sharing Sunflower photos with everyone and now I can share the photos of the tomatoes we have grown.

The tiniest tomatoes, what I call barbie tomatoes, have the most flavor. They taste amazing. So much flavor for such a tiny little thing. See, it goes to show you, that you should never judge by appearance alone….there is always so much more to everything.

The raccoons got into the ghost peppers in our garden, and they haven’t been back since. The tomatoes are all protected around an electric fence. This we had to learn the hard way. When you live in the country, critters will take out your garden if you don’t have it protected some way. The electric fence isn’t on high, just a little shock.

I was taking photos one evening and thought I was getting popped by mosquitoes, had my husband laughing so hard…”No, it’s the electric fence, I can’t touch it, it effects me…freaking vikings” then my Italian husband walks away laughing. It felt like an annoying mosquito to me.

So…the raccoons got to the ghost peppers first and after that they left everything untouched. We woke up in the morning and the peppers had some bite marks and they weren’t eaten. They probably were trying to figure out what kind of a silly garden is this. Arizona has moved in everybody.

We had so many baby cherry tomatoes I started looking into ways I could use them in my food. There are so many yummy ways. I will be making a sauce, a salad, and a pizza. I hope it comes out as good as the recipe site’s photos look. Have you ever noticed that, the food in those ads always looks so pretty and colorful.

There is a plant in our garden growing that we have no idea what it is. It has the prettiest purple flowers on it. I would look out the window staring at it, then ask someone walking by me…

“What is that?” and point to it.

Everyone shrugging their shoulders like ” I don’t know” then they would look at it just as confused as I was.

It never produced anything, just kept getting bigger and bigger. It had the cutest leaves too, shaped like hearts. Someone finally looked it up and it turns out it’s a weed.

” Well it’s the prettiest weed I’ve ever seen” I said

Why is everyone always hating on the weeds ?Turning all these natural flowers and plants into those “Bad” ones we have to spray with poisons…why? Who decided that? Come on…look at it…it’s pretty. Turns out all those hummingbirds agree with me too, you should see how they hang out around these flowers. It’s a nice show to watch when that happens.

The only thing this plant is good for is that it is very pretty, the leaves are great for castings, and the Hummingbirds love them.

We left it, we figured the pollinators might like it. I took some of the leaves and did some cement castings with them. I also did some castings with the big Elephant Ear leaves that came out in the front yard. It was a house warming gift to me when we first moved here, the bulbs produce every year now. I want to make a bird feeder out of the leaf casting to give to the person who gifted me with the bulbs.

Elephant ears are huge leaves, they make really pretty garden decor for inside or outside your home.
This leaf is HUGE, like something you would find in a rain forest.

Every time I go out to give the chicken scraps, I look at them and think I should try and make wool chicken ornaments this Christmas based off of our chickens, or cotton sculpted chickens. They are so cute. I think I might try that.

This week’s felting project are dryer balls. They will be in my Christmas gift baskets this year. The balls are used in place of dryer sheets which are very toxic in my opinion.

Wool dryer balls are natural and you can use essential oils on them to leave a nice fragrance to your clothes. I ordered some China rain for their scent, direct from a store I used to work at years ago.

If you add a fragrance, you have to make sure it’s pure essential oils, never put perfumes into a dryer that are flammable…always use pure essential oils on your wool dryer balls.

Never add your scented dryer balls to the heat setting when drying. Wait until clothes are dry and then put the scented balls in and set on tumble only. I would have two sets, one scented and one not. This will leave a nice fragrance to your clothes afterwards. I still need to sew up some pretty draw string bags to store them in when giving them out.

The weather is getting colder here and all the locals say this may mean they will not have a garden for long. Some locals tell us that there are times they get fresh garden tomatoes all the way through to the end of September. Everyone is getting their wood piles ready for snow this year.

We didn’t really have time to weed the garden, the bees love natural gardens of weeds though. There are so many butterflies and bees in our garden right now. Our garden is a chaos garden, There have been some weeds pulled from around the tomato plants though. Weeds can take out other plants so there is that, but our garden is organic, a safe place for all the critters.

We’re just happy we got tomatoes this year, what a great gift. Happy garden adventures everyone. Remember, even if you only have room for a couple little pots, please give it try, you will love it.

The sunflowers are all droopy now and ready for seeds. We had to cover them to protect them from the birds and squirrels.
