If you are new to needle felting and you’re not sure what to start off with, cookie cutters are a fun way to get a project going. Cookie cutters can be used as templates to form your shapes. You can keep them flat or you can add more wool as you sculpt around the form you created using the cookie cutter.

It’s so easy to use cookie cutters when felting. You can find cookie cutters in antique shops and they sell all kinds of shapes in the craft stores now. I have a pretty good collection going of butterflies, beehives, houses, mushrooms, animals, people, Christmas themes…it’s quite a collection. I especially love finding vintage cookie cutters. I don’t just use them for cookies now that I have taken up the hobby of needle felting.

With this vintage cookie cutter above I made a bird pincushion. The wings on the bird are little pockets where you can store extra sewing supplies like thread and buttons.

The best part about needle felting is that I can find supplies that are from where I live locally. I get my wool from a sheep farmer here in the area I live.

Eventually I hope to have our own sheep or rabbits to felt with…you just use the wool that needs shearing anyway.

The farm I am buying my supplies from gave me some free samples from her rabbits she raises, for me to try out, which may be a little more difficult to felt with as it is very fine like silk. I may just end up using it in it’s natural form over a felted item like a little sheep and then felt the strands in for extra detail, just to hang naturally from the sculpted body of the sheep. I don’t know yet since that is the fun part, experimenting and creating at the same time.

There are so many different textures and colors of wool to choose from. Needle felting is a really fun and inexpensive hobby to start. You also meet some really nice people when you start any hobby. Just getting out and sharing ideas and seeing what variety there is out there to create with.

I think my next project will be sewing up baby slippers that are super soft and adding embroidery details to them. I believe they would be good gifts to add to a basket. That’s on my list of things to learn and make. It important to switch things up when it comes to what I call brain exercising. I believe the screens are contributing to the increase in cognitive disabilities with memory and demiticia…that is so frightening. Also, I believe it has something to do withing the eniviroment and food we eat as well…anything we put into our bodies actually. We have to be so careful now days.

Anyway, if any of you want to try a new hobby, try needle felting and remember to start on cookie cutters as a beginner. There are some pretty cute critters you can make using those cookie cutters. Happy felting everyone.
