This is an easy project that all ages can enjoy. All you need are a variety of flowers and leaves to experiment with for water coloring. You will also need something to crush and grind the flowers with. Rocks and a hard surface are okay to use to crush your flower petals.

After you crush your petals add a little water to create the water color you will be using. Try a variety of plants and flowers to see what colors they create. You can use items from your veggie garden too like beets, and onions.

The plants I experimented with were Mint, roses, and dandelions. Make sure you use water coloring paper.

The mint was nice as it included the sense of smell, which would make this a great art project for anyone with ASD, a sensory art project. Make sure fragrance isn’t triggering for them though. Some children and adults are very sensitive to certain fragrances that may bother them. Experiment with that and see what your ASD child enjoys, introduce things a little at a time with them to lessen their dislikes and fears of new things to try. Baby steps all the way.

After your painting has completely dried use fine tip markers or coloring pencils to add more detail to your art.

I like to buy vintage art supplies from second hand shops as they tend to have more color pigmentation to them, the new art supplies coming out now just don’t work the same way anymore.

It’s more important then ever to get your children outside to exercise, play and create. This is one of those art projects that involves all of that. Anyway, who doesn’t like being outdoors exploring and foraging for plants to use as art supplies. Be careful of poisonous plants, make sure you do a little research before you start collecting certain leaves…you don’t want poison ivy or poison oak.
